A desiccant is a hygroscopic substance that induces or sustains a state of dryness (desiccation) in its vicinity. Commonly encountered pre-packaged desiccants are solids that adsorb water. Desiccants for specialized purposes may be in forms other than solid, and may work through other principles, such as chemical bonding of water molecules. They are commonly encountered in foods to retain crispness. Industrially, desiccants are widely used to control the level of water in gas streams.
Wikipedia also says about crops:
Pre-harvest crop desiccation (also siccation ) refers to the application of a herbicide to a crop shortly before harvest. Herbicides used include glyphosate, diquat and glufosinate. For potatoes, carfentrazone-ethyl is used. Other desiccants are cyanamide, cinidon-ethyl, and pyraflufen-ethyl.[unreliable source?] Uneven crop growth is a problem in northern climates during wet summers or when weed control is poor and several of advantages of desiccation have been cited: More even ripening is achieved and harvest can be conducted earlier; weed control is initiated for a future crop; earlier ripening allows for earlier replanting; desiccation reduces green material in the harvest putting less strain on harvesting machinery. Some crop may be mechanically destroyed when crop desiccation machinery moves through the field.
The application of glyphosate differs between countries significantly. It is commonly used in the UK where summers are wet and crops may ripen unevenly. Thus in the UK 78 % of oilseed rape is desiccated before harvest, but only 4 % in Germany.
In the US, where there is basically no limit to the usage of Glyphosate, it is routinely sprayed on most crops, almost all grains, beans, peas and pulse crops. Even sugar cane because it raises the sugar content. I say DO NOT EAT DESICCANT in any form. I also say raise your voice where ever you can to help remove these poisons from our food supply. It is not just us we are harming. All life that is exposed to Glyphosate is being harmed. Why do I feel the need to defend us against our own food supply? Why am I writing about this, it just should not be. 🙁
